GAY PANAMA

OVERHEARD…..

My partner and I are investigating Central America for travel and possible retirement ideas and wonder is Panama is gay-friendly like Costa Rica or homophobic?

Is Panama gay-positive?

It’s as gay-friendly as any Central American country you’ll find. The Catholic church gets riled up at times but for the most part the people here just mind their own business. Any way, it would be hypocritical of them since most the men here are bisexual and will have sex with anything with two legs…………………. OMG! Let me in.

Living La Vida Loca

Homosexual acts are legal in Panama. The decriminalization occurred on July 31 2008, when Presidential Decree No. 332 came into force. The age of consent is equal at 18. Panama is a city home to over three million people and as such is home to a thriving gay community. So where is the ‘gay Panama scene’ in modern times? It appears to be everywhere in many forms, visible and invisible, mod and historic, indigenous and expat, Hispanic and indian, closeted inside marriage and marching Out Proud, secreted behind HIV and outreached to with compassion. Not bad for a homophobic, Catholic and conservative society.

There is no anti-discrimination legislation in Panama although it appears that there are a number of people working towards a suitable framework for its implementation.

Our charter is determined to be an effective Anti-Discrimination Policy and a positive contributor to the social fabric of Panama; by example.

Do I have to book those tables in the front? Let me know.

There are many places in Panama, it just depends on what you want.

Does anyone have an idea of how the locals and American Expat retirees treat same sex couples in Bouquet?

Really hope someone will eventually reply. Have been flirting with the possibility of Boquete as a retirement destination but wondering if partner and I would gets looks. Would be nice if there were some other gays in the area to occasionally hang with.
